April 1st 2009-The SDCDC Seeks Board Members The South Decatur Community Development Corporation (SDCDC) has operated since 1994 mostly under the radar. Yet, if you’ve ever enjoyed the Oakhurst Arts and Music festival, stepped on the Solarium’s hardwood floor, changed clothes in the new McKoy Park Pool bath house, or read the Oakhurst Leaflet, you’ve experienced our impact. The SDCDC’s mission is to “encourage business development and economic opportunities, identify and assist in developing opportunities for housing initiatives, and increase the educational, cultural, recreational, and social opportunities for residents in the South Decatur Community.” That’s a big mission, and we need your help to continue our work.
Our accomplishments are the work of dedicated, concern citizens like you.
Here are some highlights:- Provided a $25,000 grant and a $25,000 loan to the South Decatur Community Center (Solarium) for the purchase and installation of flooring and upgraded lighting.
- Organized and now sponsor the annual Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival and 5K Arts Run.
- Purchased the woodlot at the corner of Oakview and McDonough streets, leased it back to the Oakhurst Community Garden Project and eventually transferred ownership to the Garden.
- Provided seed money to the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association to start a community newsletter, the Oakhurst Leaflet.
- Organized senior citizen lunch-and-learn events covering topics such as predatory lending, fire safety, reverse mortgages and tax relief.
- Assisted numerous low-income seniors with property tax relief payments to the City on their behalf.
- Provided a $25,000 grant to the City of Decatur Development Authority toward the construction of the new McCoy Park Pool bath house.
